IIEC urges legislators to delay vote on Omnibus legislation to understand negative cost impacts
IIEC calls on the Legislature to delay the vote on the Energy Omnibus bill and hold public hearings to fully understand the real costs and possible future impacts to consumers
Springfield, IL -- Phillip Golden, Chairman of a leading consumer advocacy group, called on the Illinois legislature Tuesday to delay a vote on the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGAA) to clarify the true economic impact it will have on electricity consumers.
Golden, whose group along with others, has raised concerns about the increases in consumer costs that will happen upon passage, along with higher costs from battery storage which will start next decade, said that the legislature has never considered the latest proposal.
Golden noted that “any benefits” that could come from the legislation would take decades to see, “whereas the real costs would start immediately.”
“How Illinois addresses the energy crisis will have impacts far beyond the 104th General Assembly. We agree with the IPA’s statement that all modeling exercises are subject to substantial uncertainty and therefore any future impacts are only a “best guess” and could be wildly wrong. Therefore, we urge members to take the time and make the right decision especially since the bill on its own terms is not effective until June of 2026.”
Also attached is the letter delivered to each legislator this past week on the issue.
